In 2021 there have been more than 216 aggressions against journalists in El Salvador, including violations, restrictions and blockades, according to data from the Association of Journalists of El Salvador.
"I have been assaulted not only by police, but also by officials, and I have seen that more than anything else in this government. High-level officials of the Executive and Legislative have attacked me on social networks, they have disqualified my work, and of course, that influences police personnel and eventually the Armed Forces to feel emboldened to attack as well," explained Beltrán Luna in an interview with the Voice of America.
On several occasions, the journalist explains, he has been described as a "paid pen", a "fifth rate file", among other epithets, by government officials. The Association of Journalists of El Salvador (APES) has a record of these aggressions made by a legislator, a minister, the director of the port institution CEPA, among others.
